summer holiday in Wellington, NZ

A little while ago – over Christmas to be exact – we took a trip to New Zealand to visit family. It was a wonderful break, and we had probably the best weather I’ve ever experienced in all my trips to NZ: warm, clear and sunny, but with the fresh breeze that only Wellington in the summer can provide.

It was the kind of summer holiday that can only be expressed in Instagram/Hipstamatic snaps. Don’t deny that you know what I mean!

These photos are what I will be gazing upon come the darkness and chill of July.

Melbourne snaps

i went to Melbourne a couple of months back. it was a very quick visit, so here are a few quick snaps.

one of these things is not like the other (photos from the Light Walk)

i went to see the Vivid Sydney Light Walk. it was pretty. here are some of my favourite moments. i do recommend going to see it. but rug up!

words and pictures – rainy day

Harajuku, May 2008.

more rainy days here.

words and pictures – cold feet

[my first foray into Meet Me At Mike's words & pictures - i may post the other themes retrospectively later on]

the coldest i think i have ever been was on a December day in 2007. it was the first day of our (i.e. me and Tim’s) Queen Charlotte Track walk. it wasn’t even a very cold day (after all it was December) but it poured with rain and we were completely soaked through, which made us very cold. cold limbs, cold nose, cold nipples, cold teeth, cold feet.

i don’t have any photos of that leg of the trip because the rain was far too heavy for busting out the camera. but this was taken the next morning. you can see how wet it was, but also how lovely it is in that part of the world.

more photos of that trip are here.

Wellington in March, Part 2

continuing on from Part 1, here are some more photos from my recent trip to Wellington

some favourite snaps from my recent trip to Wellington, New Zealand:

Flickr favourites – Saturday 07-03-09

some love from my Flickr favourites. thinking and dreaming about travel, and actually booking stuff too! i had a call first thing this morning, informing me of CHEAP FLIGHTS yayayay. so in September i am going to New Zealand’s South Island for ten days, with husband and two good pals in tow. it’s going to be great. i’ve thus far only seen the very tip of the South Island, so i’m very much looking forward to seeing snowy peaks and glaciers and spectacular photo opportunities. not to mention the food and wine…

the art of… here

it’s funny how things synchronise and fit together without any intentional effort sometimes. lately i’ve been daydreaming/planning a glorious trip to the USA for the end of next year. i loooove to research travel destinations so i’ve been burying my head in Lonely Planets and Rough Guides and Eyewitness Guides. but then, a reminder.

this window, snapped while taking a walk in my own neighbourhood to the local Italian restaurant (which was, as it happened, completely full already so we tried somewhere else instead and were so pleasantly surprised).
beauty in its quietest form. old, unassuming, often overlooked. there is so much to see in my own street, my suburb, my city. i discussed this with Tim and he reminded me of the fact that i have so many more photos of say, Tokyo than i do of my own city. it’s kind of silly when you think about it. why do we forget to see what is around us in the every day?

the next day we happened to watch the tv documentary version of this book (which i have read before and do recommend). the same message appeared again. a reminder.

so i’m not sure how i’ll go, but i’m going to try and take some more notice, more walks and more photos in my neighbourhood. maybe it will be a theme for February. we’ll see.

ferry trip to Watson’s Bay

some snaps from a trip to Watson’s Bay that i took with Tim on the weekend. i like the harbour. it really is beautiful.
