our new room

I’m 31 weeks pregnant. We’re finally getting around to sorting out some stuff for when baby arrives. You know, stuff. Like spaces to put tiny wee clothes. And somewhere for the little one to sleep.

Since baby is rooming in with us, we’re got a very limited space to play with. I felt really sad for a while that I wouldn’t get to do the whole “let’s plan and decorate a nursery” for my first baby. But in the end I am so excited about sharing and being close.

As a result, the room is starting to look more and more like a baby’s room that happens to have a queen sized bed in it. I like this.

Here’s a bit of a visual description of how the room is starting to look. If you’re an Ikea fiend like me, you’ll recognise a bunch of these items: the white Hemnes drawers, the Branas basket, the cute Spoka nightlight lamp, the Ribba frame. We do actually have all of these bits and pieces. We also have the Manhattan skyline wooden blocks from Muji. But the rest is just similar in look and feel to our room.

The walls are bright yellow and the trim is blue (something I hope to rectify soon – I love yellow but the blue trim is just way too 1990s for me!). And other things on the agenda are new blockout curtains, sheets for the cradle, and a few other things.

It’s fun.

favourites in red and cream

not a great photo, but i love this little corner of my home. you can see some of my favourite things:
1. apple jar (bought recently; currently housing tea light candles)
2. loveheart enamel mugs brought back from Prague by my mum
3. mini enamel mug brought back from Akaroa, NZ
4. french tea towel from Akaroa, NZ (who knew Akaroa would have such a great French homewares shop??)
5. doilies thrifted from Savers in Melbourne

the end.

blooms in yellow

it’s crazy how many yellow flowers have been gracing my sideboard over the last few weeks. i guess this is spring! we have freesias and hyacinths on the balcony too. and petunias i think. it’s great having a garden man for a husband.

another corner of my home: august 2009

same same. but different.

Thrifted Corners of My Home

thanks for all the kind words about the card designs. it is so great to have encouragement like that! i often feel like i am incredibly behind everyone else in terms of where i should be in my design career, mostly because i don’t think i’m actually that creative. but enough of my neuroticism!

i spent last weekend in Melbourne, staying with my sister and her family. while it was warm, it was definitely not a delibitating 43 degrees as it has been this week! so we did manage to get out and do some fun stuff, including a quick visit to some local op shops. i had been pining to go op shopping for aaaages. so i was very happy, and lucky too it seems. i think i spent around $20 and came home with two books (The Beauty Myth and Love in a Cold Climate), a whole heap of vintage bed linen, some pretty doilies and a couple of other miscellaneous bits and pieces. very happy.

p.s. don’t worry i haven’t forgotten the Japanese giveaway! it is coming very soon…

the weekend

just a little afternoon tea: a block of sakura-patterned Meiji chocolate (the chocolate in Japan is great!) and my usual Dilmah with milk.

some things i'm doing this weekend:
+ walking in the sun
+ vaguely dreaming/planning some travel for next year
+ missing my sister and nephew who went home to Melbourne yesterday
+ making soup (i think it's going to be… pumpkin, carrot and white bean)
+ adoring the June sunshine

what are you doing this weekend?

late and pink

only a month late, but that’s okay. i set this up when i took down our Christmas decorations. what can you see here? too many pretty things to name. swaps from afar, some belle and boo, collected shells, fabric scraps. the little things which add up to something greater.

Corner of my Home

short and sweet blog entries are where it’s at right now. the equivalent of a cup of tea as opposed to a full meal. you know what i mean.

hello tree! it’s an Ikea STATIST tree: was originally our Christmas tree, now holds and displays my jewellery. and other bits. like my A reserve tickets to Swan Lake by The Australian Ballet at the beautiful Sydney Opera House on my birthday (can’t wait).
