mmm eggs

Tracey’s post here reminded me that I would like to try more premade GF snack foods. I’ve never really bought anything like that except for Carman’s Muesli bars (which I think are great). I’m not Coeliac so I don’t need to eat GF but I am sensitive to wheat so I try to avoid it.

So then I was thinking about how my life changed when a GP suggested I give up wheat. Like a lot of Coeliacs, I found it really difficult at first but then my horizons broadened vastly and I realised how I could turn this to my advantage – after all, all fresh fruit and veg is wheatfree! As is fresh meat, seafood, most dairy, rice, quinoa, etc. lots of different, delicious foods.

Which brings me to my quarter-life discovery of eggs. I was never an egg eater growing up. The texture still occasionally bothers me (I do not like any slimy foods and poached eggs unfortunately fall into that category). But in Japan last year, I had omelets for breakfast every day at my hostel in Tokyo. They were perfectly fluffy and came with slices of cucumber on the side. So when I got home, I started eating omelets. Then frittatas. Then fried eggs. FRIED EGGS! There is really nothing easier to cook and eat. Most times I eat them plain on a piece of rye toast with tomato sauce (sometimes with cucumber slices on the side). One time I fancied them up with chilli, ginger and garlic and served them on rice with broccoli for dinner. And of course, there is the protein-tastic classic bacon and eggs combo.

So this is my favourite gluten free meal (using GF bread of course). Easy peasy… japanesey.

down the Rabbit Hole

Picture 2

Rabbit Hole is the in-house design studio for the 4th year students at my old uni. this is a new endeavour, and i have to say i’m so impressed. there is some beautiful work in the collection so far (actually there’s some work from my grad year – 2005 – included too, but i don’t know if i’d describe it as beautiful!).

i must admit i’m jealous of their graf panels too (as oxymoronic as organised graffiti is). why didn’t they do that when i was there?!

the website itself is quite lovely too. mmmm white space and pastel colours.

words and pictures – collecting

[for more words & pictures on collecting, see here]

i have had many collections over the years. when i was little it was keyrings. rubbers – sorry, erasers. Babysitters Club books (ha). as i got older it was CDs. paper and stationery. and now it’s vintage aprons, tea towels, pillow cases… okay just linens in general. and fabric.

but one of my favourite collections of all time is stickers. what a geek! but they have so much colour. and charm. and they bring back so many memories of Rolf Heimann books and Scholastic book club catalogues.

so here’s a peek at my back catalogue…

p.s. it’s my birthday, hooray!

words and pictures – cold feet

[my first foray into Meet Me At Mike's words & pictures - i may post the other themes retrospectively later on]

the coldest i think i have ever been was on a December day in 2007. it was the first day of our (i.e. me and Tim’s) Queen Charlotte Track walk. it wasn’t even a very cold day (after all it was December) but it poured with rain and we were completely soaked through, which made us very cold. cold limbs, cold nose, cold nipples, cold teeth, cold feet.

i don’t have any photos of that leg of the trip because the rain was far too heavy for busting out the camera. but this was taken the next morning. you can see how wet it was, but also how lovely it is in that part of the world.

more photos of that trip are here.

arrived

well here i am at WordPress. my new home. it feels good. and invigorating: i have lots of ideas for new posts… just watch this space!

now i just need my readers back. if you are reading this, please leave me a comment so that i know you’re still around.

threefoals.com – halfway review

so, my collaborative photo blog is half way through it's first month. the theme for June is 'A Photo A Day', and above you can see some of my favourites so far.

Threefoals is contributed to by myself and two friends (one local and one not-so-local).

you can read/see more from my lovely friends at their Flickrs and Tumblrs: here's Miso's, and here's Fiona's. and my own Flickr is riiiiiight here.

attempting to shoot and upload a (decent) photograph every day is proving quite challenging. i think the biggest hurdle is that we're in the midst of Winter here so by the time i get home from work, it's already dark . yes the simplest solution to that would be to take my camera to work with me (and i have done this… once!) but i have a very good excuse for not doing this: i don't have a camera bag. i'm leaning towards a nice little backpack-style one, but i am open to other suggestions! anyone?

anyway. enjoy our photos.

Things I Love Thursday 21st February

Applemartin0208 + Rozelle markets (i only ever want to by my jewellery from there! for ever and ever!)

+ Cupcakes on Pitt changing their cupcakes to a smaller size

+ The Lives of Others (quite stunning, have you seen it?)

+ new favourite blogs: How About Orange and Nubby Twiglet

+ cutest hot water bottle covers ever (via swissmiss). yes, way too early and way too hot to be thinking about hot water bottle covers (and i don’t even use one in winter!) but i just love this one.

+ researching places to eat at Tokyo Disney. can you image eating gumbo in The Blue Bayou? in JAPAN? i am so hanging out for these kinds of crazy moments.

+ my Powerbook. i often forget to be grateful for the things that i use
every day. i’ve gotta say, it’s really nice having my laptop to use on
the couch or sitting on my bed or even on the kitchen bench,
mid-recipe. i get to use a lovely 24(?) inch iMac at work so i am a
lucky girl.

the end.

Things I Love Thursday 14th February (special Valentine’s edition!)

i love:

these Flickr favourites and they feeling they give me inside my heart. aww. lately i’ve been craving and dreaming and loving grey, garlands, hearts, simple shapes, beautiful animals and (as always) yellow. this mosaic could’ve been better if i had arranged it properly, but i kinda like adding in the URLs randomly to see what comes up. it reminds me of a patchwork quilt.

which leads me to my next love:

this book – Last Minute Quilted and Patchwork gifts. i really, really want this. i love that it contains projects of varying lengths of time. plus it’s all about making things to give as gifts, which really floats by boat.

also this book and this book. i have just finished the former (it only took about a year! geeze). i want to know more about Florence Broadhurst. i thus far have a very mixed opinion.

and lastly, this amazing Flickr user. if you think my breakfast photos are nice, you MUST look at Bowhaus’ breathtaking breakfast project.

erm. i guess this wasn’t very Valentine-y after all. oh well!
